Lady Hamilton aged 10

Drawing. The original mount is in a melinex envelope and has several inscriptions, see below.

'Portrait of a welsh girl afterwards Lady Hamilton', inscribed on wood support in pen.

'Drawn by the Honble Charle Greville 1775', written on paper label in ink.

'Probably the earliest authentic portrait of Lady Hamilton when aged 15', written on backing board in a different hand. In 1775 Emma was aged 9 or 10, which equates to the aged of child shown in the watercolour - her date of birth was previously wrongly thought to be around 1761.

'This portrait was drawn and painted in 1775 by the Hon Charles Greville. It represents Emma Hart who became his mistress and subsequently married his Uncle Sir William Hamilton, KB Ambassador at Naples. She was beloved of Nelson and many times painted by Romney.
The portrait was first in possession of Dr James Graham the Quack Doctor (1745-94) in whose show Emma represented "The Goddess of Health" and subsequently it belonged to her husband Sir William Hamilton', inscribed on a later label in a different hand.
