Captn. G.W. Manby, F.R.S. [George William Manby] Author of the plan for the preservation of Shipwrecked Mariners also for rescuing persons from the Flames, and for saving those, who break through the Ice
Print. George William Manby was a militia captain and the barrack master at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (from 1803). He invented the line-firing mortar known as the 'Manby apparatus' for saving lives from ships wrecked close to shore. It was first successfully used at Yarmouth in 1808 and rapidly became widespread.
