British Admirals. Howe. St Vincent. Nelson. Duncan. Collingwood. Engraved by Meyer from Original Drawings in Bowyer's Gallery

Technique includes etching and stipple. Four oval bust-length portraits of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799), John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820), Adam Duncan, Viscount Duncan (1731–1804) and Cuthbert Collingwood, Baron Collingwood (1748–1810) with an octagonal portrait of Horatio Nelson, Viscount Nelson (1758–1805) in the centre. The portraits are surrounded by naval trophies, including flags, cannon, a sword, an anchor, a trident, springs of oak and a laurel crown. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘British Admirals. Engraved by Meyer from Original Drawings in Bowyer’s Gallery.’ Also lettered with the publication line: ‘London. Published by Edwd. Baines June 1 1816.’ This print was engraved by Henry Meyer and published by Edward Baines in 1816. The portraits were engraved after drawings apparently owned by the miniaturist and publisher Robert Bowyer, which were themselves after portrait paintings. The details of the portriats are as follows. TOP LEFT: a bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–95, after John Singleton Copley’s portrait of ca. 1791, a version of which is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2790). TOP RIGHT: a bust-lenth portrait to left of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent, in a plain dark coat after (in reverse) William Beechey’s portrait of 1807–9, a version of which is now in the National Portrait Gallery. CENTRE: a bust-length portrait of Horatio Nelson in flag-officer’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon of the Order of the Bath after John Hoppner’s portrait of 1801–2, which was painted for the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and remains in the Royal Colllection. BOTTOM LEFT: a bust-length portrait of Adam Duncan in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the sash of the Russian Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky and the ribbon of the Camperdown gold medal around his neck, after John Hoppner’s full-length of 1798 (Forfar Town and County Hall). BOTTOM RIGHT: a bust-length portrait of Cuthbert Collingwood in captain’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, after a miniature by Robert Bowyer now in the Bayne-Powell collection. Stored in mount with PAD3724. (Upated June 2019.)
