The Rt Honble Alexander Hood, Viscount Bridport, K.B. Bridport

A three-quarter-length portrait of Alexander Hood (1726–1814) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with the ribbon (mostly hidden under his coat) and star of the Order of the Bath and the Glorious First of June gold chain, extending his right arm in a pointing gesture. In the background, a view of Hood’s engagement with the French Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse off Port l’Orient in June 1795. Lettered beneath the image with a facsimile of the sitter’s signature and the title, ‘The Rt Honble. Alexander Hood, Viscount Bridport, K. B.’. Also lettered with the publication details, ‘Painted by L. F. Abbott / Engraved by S. Freeman. / Fisher, Son & Co. London, 1840’. This portrait was engraved by Samuel Freeman after Lemuel Francis Abbott’s oil painting of around 1795, now in the Yale Centre for British Art. The print was published by Fisher, Son & Co. in 1840. It is a reprint from the plate engraved as an illustration for William Jerdan’s ‘National Portrait Gallery of Illustrious and Eminent Personages of the Nineteenth Century’ (London: Fisher, Son, & Jackson, 1833), volume 4. (Updated May 2019.)
