The Rt Honble Earl Howe. Engraved for the Register of the Times
An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, with his left arm raised. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Rt. Honble. Earl Howe.’ Also lettered with the production and publication details: ‘Engraved for the Register of the Times. / W. Ridley sculp. / Published July 31 1794 by B. Crosby, Stationers Court, Ludgate Street.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley and published on 31 July 1794 by Benjamin Crosby (of 4 Stationers Court, Ludgate Street, London) as an illustration in ‘The Register of the Times, or Political Museum’, volume 1 (1794), opposite page 1. The print was a replacement for a portrait of Howe published in an earlier edition of the journal, which Crosby believed to be inadequate (see PAD0104). (Updated June 2019.)
