Miggiar, Gozo 22 March 1866. 1.30. P M (226)
Medium includes ink. According to Lear's diary (Houghton Library, Harvard, MS Eng 797.3, (9)), he was on the island of Gozo from 16 to 23 March 1866. On Thursday 22 March, he travelled to the port of Mġarr around midday, where, in his words, he “drew a good while (this is the real place for drawing Gozo boats).” Mġarr is the small harbour that connects Gozo to mainland Malta by ferry service. The annotation ‘Miggiar’ on this drawing refers to the Italian name ‘Migiarro’, which in the nineteenth century was often used instead of the Maltese word 'Mġarr'.
