Barrel loft with jib and crane and large rocks

Medium includes graphite. This drawing of wash and graphite on blue-grey paper, with white heightening is much more likely to be by Stanfield than Cooke, or given its slightly tentative quality by Stanfield's son George Clarkson Stanfield. The subject is almost certainly Alpine though the exact function of the mechanism shown is not clear. The crane element is almost certainly for lifting heavy loads, such as quarried rock or marble and the rest the balancing counterbracing. [PvdM 5/09]
