A Malay trader with his son Arron

A photograph taken outdoors of a Malay merchant seated on a chair with a walking stick between his knees and his hands resting on the top. Standing to his left is a young boy in a dark woven drape over his left shoulder and around his right hip. The boy's right hand is resting on the left arm of the merchant.

The merchant is wearing a songkok hat and an open fronted knee-lenth coat similar to a sherwani over the top of a patterned sarong-like cloth wrap.

The print has a caption stating: 'A Malay trader and his son Arron'

If this photograph was taken in Fiji, where it appears in the album sequence, then HMS Challenger (1858) visited Ngaloa and Levuka between 25 July and 1 August 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
