A round photographic portrait of an unknown Tongan man standing on the starboard side of the upper deck of HMS Challenger (1858), looking at the camera. He is standing beside the companionway to the main deck below and the skylight. His left hand is on one of the metal pillars holding up the Conning Bridge above. In the background is the ship's wheel. The man is topless and wearing a white tupenu (cloth wrap skirt). His right hand is resting on his hip.

HMS Challenger (1858) visited Tonga/Tongatabu between 19 and 22 July 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
