A seated Fijian woman in a short liku skirt.

A portrait photograph of a Fijian woman seated in a short pale coloured liku (fibre skirt), looking at the camera. Her hair has been covered in a hair net. She is also wearing a bracelet on each wrist and a short necklace made up of a pendant and a narrow strip of cloth.

It is likely that this is not a photograph from the expedition, as it is in a photographic studio, indicated by the painted backdrop scenery.

The print has a caption stating: 'Fijian'

HMS Challenger (1858) visited Ngaloa and Levuka between 25 July and 1 August 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
