One of a group of compositional drawings that combine pencil drawing with a loose, light wash, suggesting an overriding concern with the play of light and shadow. To the left is a port quarter view of a ship, flanked by two other ships lying dead before the wind in the middle distance. Several other vessels appear further into the distance.
