HMS 'Cumberland'
Inscribed by the artist 'HMS Cumberland', lower right, but the real subject here is the sea and dramatic evening coastline - which may be Scottish. The ship which provides the point of focus is the armoured cruiser 'Cumberland', launched on 16 December 1902 and completed on 1 December 1904. From August 1914 to January 1915 she was operating off the west coast of Africa and then joined the 6th Cruiser Squadron employed on Atlantic Ocean escort duties from late 1915 for the rest of the war. The date of this drawing could therefore be either before the First World War or perhaps on the west coast of Scotland from 1915 on.
