'Jetty Becton Gasworks'
A watercolour of the jetty at Beckton Gas Works. It was over 400 yards (365m) in length. Steam colliers carrying coal from the north of England moored at the jetty in order to be unloaded, as depicted here. Hydraulic cranes were used to fill trolleys with coal that were then conveyed along the jetty to the works. A number of craft are depicted here including a steam tug, Thames barges and lighters. The work is signed 'W L Wyllie', lower left. Wyllie also exhibited a large oil painting of this subject at the Royal Academy.
