Ships off Dover
A painting showing a variety of shipping in the Downs in calm seas. In addition to the British squadron under sail, other ships can be seen at anchor. Small local vessels are also shown moving amongst the large ships.
The Downs was an area of anchorage during the days of sail situated on the south east coast. The white cliffs, and perhaps the port of Dover, can be seen in the distance.
The painting is signed ‘F.Holman’.
