HMY Alberta Entering Portsmouth Harbour with the Body of Queen Victoria, 1 February 1901

Queen Victoria died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight on 22 January 1901. On 1 February her body was brought across the Solent to Portsmouth on board the royal yacht 'Alberta', in preparation for her funeral at Windsor on 6 February. Wyllie witnessed the scene from the flagship HMS 'Majestic'. The Alberta' was berthed alongside the Clarence Yard, and the Queen's body remained on board overnight. The following morning twelve sailors bore the coffin on their shoulders to the train which was to take it to London. See also PAF1752, PAH4066.
