A clipper near the Needles
'A clipper near the Needles' signed lower right, 'J. Adams RYDE 1889'. Previously wrongly attributed to John Clayton Adams, for no apparently good reason (since he was a contemporary English landscape painter based in Surrey). This is the only example by this hand listed in Archibald's 'Dictionary of Sea Painters' which, probably rightly, suggests he was a ship portraitist based at Ryde, Isle of Wight, as the subject and signature suggest.
