A royal yacht at Greenwich

A view across the river towards the incomplete Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, including the eastern range of the King Charles Court designed by John Webb and built in 1664-69 shown in the centre. The dome is that of the the King William Court completed around 1707: the Queen Mary Court with the other dome, to the east, was not begun until 1735. Three royal yachts are shown on the water, although the main focus is the ornately decorated one in the foreground slightly to the left of centre off the north shore of the river on the east side of the Isle of Dogs. This is flying the Royal Standard and is exchanging salutes with one on the left. Two figures, a man and a woman, are shown looking through the windows from the stern of the yacht and other people can be seen in the cabin beyond them. Since the Royal Standard flies from the mainmast, the implication is is that the couple in the stern are Queen Anne and her husband Prince George of Denmark, Duke of Cumberland, who was Lord High Admiral and Chairman of the Grand Committee of Greenwich Hospital to his death in 1708. There is also a ceremonial barge in the centre of the river, and figures in the yacht on the left are waving and cheering the one in the centre. An elegantly dressed couple are also shown on the bank walking towards it, while a labourer turns around from his work to look in the same direction. Cows grazing on the riverbank look on unconcerned. The turret on the roof of the King Charles Court of the Hospital appears on early engraved prospects of it and was in fact built in 1718 and removed in 1733: this might suggest the painting is later, but it is more likely that it is drawing on engravings.
