Admiral Sir Charles Madden (1906-2001), son of an well-known Admiral of the Fleet of the First World War was himself a distinguished naval officer in the Second and thereafter. He was a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum from 1968 and Chairman of the Board from 1972 until his retirement from it in 1977. He was also a keen and talented amateur artist, primarily in watercolour, and this is a good example of his work, which he presented [to be checked]. The Museum also has a fine portrait of him by John Ward. PvdM 4/04
