Greenwich. View across the river from the North showing the Royal Naval College and other buildings, with barges in the foreground

Titled 'Greenwich', lower left, and signed 'Charles Madden '74', lower right. A view from the north, the corner of Greenwich Power Station with its coaling jetty on the left, part of the King Charles Court on the right and the domes of the Old Royal Naval College in the centre above the white highlight provided by the Trafalgar Tavern. Admiral Sir Charles Madden (1906-2001), son of an well-known Admiral of the Fleet of the First World War was himself a distinguished naval officer in the Second and thereafter. He was a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum from 1968 and Chairman of the Board from 1972 until his retirement from it in 1977. He was also a keen and talented amateur artist, primarily in watercolour, and this is a good example of his work, which he presented [to be checked]. The Museum also has a fine portrait of him by John Ward. PvdM 4/04
