Maarten Tromp and the Battle of the Ness, 30 November 1652
'Maarten Tromp and the Battle of the Ness, 30 November 1652'. This is a derivative image of which there are other versions, probably disseminated through Dutch prints and replicated in oil by various hands: there are versions in Rotterdam Museum signed 'M.E. van H', the Museum Huis Van Gijn and the Historisch Museum den Briel (both anonymous): there is also another in Delft (Prinsenhof or Museum Lambert van Meerten). The heads may be based on a print after Cornelis van Dalen. See also BHC2509, which purports to be a portrait of George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, also of similar pattern. [PvdM 7/12, amended 11/16]
