Portrait of a lieutenant, ca.1780
A half-length portrait to the left, showing the unidentified sitter in lieutenant’s uniform (1768–87 patter), wearing his own hair powdered. The portrait was acquired as being of Thomas Trotter (1760–1832), physician to the fleet and pioneer of antiscorbutic treatment using citrus juice. However, at the time of painting, Trotter would have worn the uniform of a surgeon’s mate.
