Portrait of a lieutenant, ca.1800
A full-length, full-square portrait, showing the unidentified sitter facing right in lieutenant’s full dress uniform (1787–1812 pattern), wearing boots and a cocked hat. He is standing against a rocky outcrop on the beach with his right hand resting on his sheathed sword and holding gloves in his left. His hair is powdered. A squadron at anchor forms the left background, possibly in Cork Harbour (?).
