This painting depicts the City of Tanjore in starboard broadside view with a rocky headland on the right and a distant rock on the left. The vessels name is inscribed on the bow. It flies the house flag of George Smith & Co.
The City of Tanjore was built by Robert Steele & Co at Greenock and completed in January 1856. It sailed from the Clyde for Calcutta on 24 January 1856. In the Mercantile Navy List, its signal letters are given as KTBM, but for unclear reasons the painting shows the signal letters LJHS: this may be the result of the artists error.
