The Attack on the Barrier Forts Near Canton, China by the American Squadron... Nov 21st 1856 - consisting of the US Sloops of War Portsmouth and Levant with the Officers and Crew of the Steam Frigate San Jacinto

In 1850s, the Qing Dynasty court rejected the demands from Britain, France, and the USA, which expanded their privileges in China. From 23 October to 13 November 1856, operations were commenced against the Barrier Forts on the Canton River because of the Arrow Incident. This image shows an American Squadron, consisting of the US sloops Portsmouth and Levant, with the officers and crew of the Steam Frigate San Jacinto, attacking the Barrier Forts near Canton on 21 November 1856.
