A painting showing the Royal Naval frigate 'Raleigh’ off Portsmouth. Most of her sails are let fly except an outer jib as she slowly makes her way into the harbour with the old semaphore tower visible beyond her amidships, and old Portsmouth with St Thomas's church (now Portsmouth cathedral) and the King's Battery (the saluting platform) just astern. Inside the harbour are the masts of a number of ships at anchor and what is probably HMS 'Victory', shown port broadside on. Built in Chatham in 1845 the 'Raleigh' was wrecked in 1857. A small craft with red sails is shown sailing out of the mouth of the harbour. The painting is signed ‘R.S. Thomas Pt’ and dated 1850, lower right.
