This watercolour shows J.S. White's shipbuilding yard at Cowes, Isle of White. On the left is the 'Capricorn' with the 'Solent' preparing for launch beyond. Behind that is the 'Melville', which was built at Bombay in 1817 and converted to a hospital ship at Cowes in 1856-7. Signed by artist and dated on a piece of wood in the centre left foreground.
