The clipper 'Scottish Chieftain'
Ship portrait. Oil painting of the full-rigged ship - essentially a clipper - 'Scottish Chieftain, in starboard-broadside view, flying her code number, an unidentified house flag and at the fore a signal for a pilot (a Union flag with a white border). The pilot cutter is approaching under her bow with the cliffs at Dover beyond. Dover Castle is also fairly clearly shown. The ship has taken-off sail by lowering her topgallants and her royals are shown fully furled 'in pigs' ears'. Fore details of the artist, see BHC3217.
