The steamship Straits of Belle Isle
This painting features a port broadside view of the screw steamer ‘Straits of Belle Isle’, flying the flag of N. MacLean & Co., with a sailing vessel in the left-hand distance. Inscribed bottom centre, ‘SS Straits of Belle Isle’.
The vessel was built in 1870 by Robert Napier & Sons, Govan, as the ‘Lord of the Isles’. In 1889, it was renamed ‘Straits of Belle Isle’ and owned by N. MacLean & Co., Glasgow. The vessel then became the Japanese ‘Hokuku Maru’ in 1894 and was scuttled in February 1904.
