Portrait of the 'Hannibal'
This is a portrait of the ‘Hannibal’ viewed from the port beam. The figurehead is a man on horseback.
It is a careful and accurate drawing, possibly based on an offset from an original by the Elder, worked up in considerable detail with light grey wash strengthened with a little pen and brown ink. There would have been an opportunity for drawing a Danish ship in 1659. This date is confirmed by the drawing’s watermark.
