Admiral Earl Howe Anno Act 69

A half-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Earl Howe. Anno Aet. 69.’ Also lettered with the production detail and publication line, ‘Engraved by E. Finden. / London, Published by John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1837.’ This print was engraved by Edward Finden after John Singleton Copley’s bust-length oil painting of around 1790, originally painted for display underneath his massive painting of the Siege of Gibraltar (Guildhall Art Gallery). A version of this painting is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2790). Finden’s print was published by John Murray in 1837 and appeared as a frontispiece in John Barrow’s ‘The Life of Richard Earl Howe, K.G., Admiral of the Fleet, and General of Marines’ (London: John Murray, 1838). (Updated June 2019.)
