HMS 'Donegal' in dry dock at Portsmouth, 1885
Hardy travelled in France and Holland before first exhibiting in 1871. His best works, usually on a small scale and delicate, were produced in the 1870s and 1880s. After this his work tended to coarsen and become repetitive. It is likely that this untypical work was drawn from life in Portsmouth dockyard. It is signed and dated 1885.
