John (‘Jack’) McGivering was born in Bebington, Cheshire. During the First World War he was an officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR), serving on minesweepers and patrol boats. He was promoted to temporary lieutenant in 1916 and his appointments included command of the motor launch ML 339. Towards the end of 1918 he was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar with influenza. He was demobilised in the following year and in civilian life worked as a manager for the Midland Bank in Oxford.
