Boat model

A fibreglass replica of the 'Broighter Boat'. The original 'Broighter Boat' was discovered as part of a hoard of gold artefacts dated to the 1st Century BC in Limavady, Northern Ireland and is now held at the National Museum of Ireland.
The original gold model measures 18.4 cm x 7.6cm and weighs 85g. It provides a fascinating insight into Iron Age boabuilding in North-West Europe and is the earliest depiction of an Irish vessel. The hull was made from beaten gold and included a mast and oars. It is debatable as to the accuracy of the hull and fittings, although it is thought to possibly represent a skin boat, similar in form to the curraghs which can still be found on the West coast of Ireland.
