Electrotype seal
Electrotype seal die of Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) as Warden of the Stannaries, Captain of the Queen's Guard and Governor of Jersey. A mounted knight riding to left, deeply cut, the horse ad rider fully armed, the knight holding a sword in his upraised right hand and a shield in his left. The shield and the trappings of the horse with the arms of Raleigh: Gules, five fusils argent on a bend. Legend in two lines: '+. SIGIL . DNI . WALTERI : RALEGH : MILITIS : GARDIAN : STANNAR : CORNVB : ET : DEVON : +CAPITAN : GARD : REG :ET : GVBERNATOR : INSVLAE : DE : IERSEY.' One of 600 numbered copies made by Crichtons. This is number 52. Raleigh was given the Wardenship of the Stannaries (tin mines in Devon and Cornwall) in 1585.
