No.363

Pocket watch in silver case. Thirty hour duration, single train, gilt brass, capped, four pillar fusee movement with cylinder escapement, brass escape wheel. Polished flat steel balance with blued-steel, flat spiral balance spring. Engraved balance cock with grotesque mask and diamond endstone in blued-steel setting. Bosley regulator engraved with the letters 'S' and 'F'. Engraved on barrel bridge with the words 'DOCKWRAY', 'LONDON' and the number '363'. Stop-piece acting on escape wheel operated by a lever inside the bezel at 4 o'clock. Gilt brass cap. Flat white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, minute circle and diamond shaped quarter markers. Subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic ten-second numerals and seconds circle. Gold spade and poker hands. Blued-steel counterbalanced seconds hand. Silver open face consular case hallmarked 'London 1808-1809' with incuse makers stamp 'W L' and 'W'. Scratched inside dome with the words 'Oct 1830', 'Jan 1841', '9 EBP', '$$156D', '6533', '5299', 'SP1319', '15444' and '28465'. Scratched inside case back with the words 'Given Dec 31 1841 for Jany 1', 'GS 4 37', '5874', '5879', 'SPB23/62', '$$', 'JB31y', 'jc7/78', 'T Grants', '21(?)' and 'Thayer St Manchester'. Many of these scratched marks are barely legible. Engraved crest with Latin motto on the case back 'Mutare vel timere sperno', thought to be the motto of Benjamin Stowe. Oval section stepped pendant and stirrup bow. Convex glass over dial. Piece of lined paper inside the case back with the following inscription in black ink 'This watch was owned by Benjamin Stowe - related to Dufferin & Ara family - and sank with him in the Royal George. Brought up by divers and identified by crest'. The dial and hands are late 19th century replacements. This watch is said to have been recovered from the wreck site of the 'Royal George', which was lost in 1782, but the hallmark is of a much later date and the watch movement shows no sign of damage caused by the ingress of sea water. The inscription is therefore thought to be dubious.
