Medal commemorating the destruction of the Spanish fleet off Santiago Cuba, 1898. Obverse: Short bust of Admiral William Thomas Sampson (1840-1902) (front), framed. Inscription (on either side of the frame): '1889' (left); '1948' (right). Legend: 'FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NAVY'S "FOURTH OF JULY" PRESENT.' Below: 'ADMIRAL WILLIAM T. SAMPSON.' Reverse: Within sprays of bay leaves inscription, 'DESTRUCTION OF SPANISH FLEET OFF SANTIAGO CUBA JULY 3, 1898. THE FLEET OFFERS THE NATION AS A FOURTH OF JULY PRESENT THE WHOLE OF CERVERA'S FLEET - SAMPSON. THERE IS GLORY ENOUGH FOR ALL - SCHLEY.' Legend (below): 'AMERICAN COMMEMORATIVE SOCIETY.'
