Richard Deane, 1610-53, General-at-Sea

Oval miniature in watercolour in an oval glazed gilt metal frame, with a scratched inscription on the reverse 'Admiral Dean 1649'. There is also a larger oval lacquered and moulded wooden frame (detached, 115 x 100mm) into which the smaller one is intended to fit [TBC]: this also carries a label 'Admiral Dean'. The sitter is shown head and part shoulders, turned to his right but looking out at the viewer against a background which could be sea or sky. He has grey-blue eyes, full long, brown, slightly curly hair, and wears a full white neckcloth over what appears to be intended as armour. There is an area of brown overpaint round the top of the head and partly down the right side.

The previous Museum record describes this miniature as '? very inferior 17th century': this is a little harsh, since the likeness to Walker's portrait is good, and the image characterful and by a practised individual hand, albeit unsophisticated. If the scratched 1649 inscription on the back is contemporary and/or the background is indeed intended as sea, it perhaps marks his naval appointment that year.
