Plan du Fort Royal tel quil estoit il y a quattre ans

Single sheet, manuscript. This is a pictorial sketch chart of Fort-de-France, Martinique, drawn on the back of an unused page from an English muster book. The chart is ungraduated and shows rocks, soundings and anchorages as well as a plan of the town . Ships are depicted in the harbour and buildings are shown in view. The chart contains a key to the fortifications and notes on anchorages.

Fort Royal was first built in 1638, but was destroyed and rebuilt in 1669. It was captured by the British during the 7 Years War in 1762, which Robert Duff, in whose map collection this map sits, took part.
