Patch box

Oval enamel patch box wih a hinged lid, with a polychrome transfer, after a Rodney Shackell drawing, depicting the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. The battle scene has a rope twist border and is flanked by naval trophies. On a ribbon scroll below: 'TRAFALGAR'. The coat of arms of George III is on the base inside. Inscribed inside the lid: 'In October, 1805, Nelson met the combined fleets of France and Spain, emerging from Cadiz; confident in his bold plan of attack, he signalled to the fleet "England expects that every man will do his duty". During the battle he was fatally shot on Victory's deck but lived long enough to hear of his own victory.' The base is coloured royal blue with the maker's name and the year of manufacture, 'MARITIME ENGLAND. MADE IN BILSTON IN THE YEAR 1982.' Contained in a blue velvet-lined box.
