Box
Box commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). A circular turned lignum vitae box with a screw lid. Loosely attached to the top by a brass ring is a glazed miniature portrait of Nelson, in uniform and hat, facing half left. The portrait is painted on ivory and the image is a copy of the posthumous 1805 portrait by Arthur William Devis. He did several versions of this and one was engraved in Dr Beatty's published 'Narrative' of Nelson's death. The NMM version is BHC2270.
