Warship (1745); Warship; Sixth rate; Sloop; 24 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 24-gun, sixth-rate sloop (circa 1745), built in the Georgian style. The model is decked, equipped and rigged with the sails furled. From the model, the vessel measured 109 feet in length along the gun deck by 30 feet in the beam, displacing approximately 430 tons burden. It was armed with twenty 9-pounders on the gun deck and four 6-pounders on the quarterdeck.

The dimensions are almost those of the 24-gun ships of the 1740s but the depth is a little too shallow. Although this is probably not an official Navy Board model, the workmanship is of a high standard. The proportions of the rigging are exceptionally good and the sails shown in their ‘stowed’ positions present a very neat feature. The guns are a slightly heavy but are well proportioned. They all show the lead vent covers on the upper side of the barrels. This feature is not normally seen in the 18th-century models. The model was previously in the Royal United Services Institution.
