Lightning (1854); Cargo vessel; Passenger/cargo vessel; Clipper
Scale: 1:96. Full hull model of the 'Lightning' (1854), a cargo clipper ship. The hull is long with fine lines and a bow which extends forward above the waterline. Below the waterline the model is painted to reflect copper sheathing, above the waterline the hull is painted black. The model three masted, decked, equipped and ship-rigged. The model has a swallow tailed red flag with a black disc in the centre, the house flag of the Black Ball line.
The 'Lightning' was an extreme clipper ship built in 1854 by Donald McKay, East Boston. Extreme clippers were built for speed rather than overall cargo capacity. Her dimensions were 226'×44'×26' [loa 243'] and tonnage: 2084 tons. Registered in LIverpool she was engage in trade and carrying passengers between Australia and Britain. She burnt at Geelong near Melbourne in 1869.
