Arapiles(1861); Warship:Spanish; Frigate; Screw; 51 guns

Scale: 1:48. Full-hull model of the 'Arapiles' (1861), a Spanish 51-gun steam frigate, carved out of wood. Model is decked. Text on the base reads 'Messrs R & H Green Blackwall 1861. 'Arapiles'. 51 gun screw frigate. 800. N.H.P. for the Spanish Govt. Length between perps 280.11 Breadth extreme 52' 2 Depth in hold 17' 3 1/8 Burthen in tons 3441 5/94'. Built by Green's, the ship's name commemorates Wellington's victory over the French at the battle of Salamanca (known to the Spanish and French as Los Arapiles, the hills where it was fought) during the Peninsular War.

The ship was originally intended as an unarmoured screw frigate. Construction was authorized on 10 April 1861 and contract placed abroad ('exceptionally, for a wooden screw frigate') with R & H Green of Blackwall, 15 April. Keel laid 1 June but in April 1862 it was decided she should be armour-plated. Further discussions about this major design change resulted in a new contract signed 10 January 1864 and the vessel was launched on 17 October. Financial problems and Government embargo on exports to Spain during her war against Chile and Peru led to completion delays but she was handed over to the Comission Marina in Britain on 14 Sept 1868 and sailed for Spain where she was fully equipped by 6 December. Green's presented the Spanish Naval Museum with a model of her, which they still have. She was 5468 tons displacement, 86 m long, had engines of 800 NHP and six boilers, with a speed of 12.5 knots. Armour plate was 12 cm at waterline, supplied by John Brown.
