Accumulator (1955); Fishing vessel; Drifter

One of a series of scenic models built at a scale of 1:96 to illustrate the different methods to catch fish from 1950 onwards. It shows the drift net vessel 'Accumulator', launched in 1955, with the nets set. The hull is inscribed with its name and port registration markings ‘BF215’ either side of the bow, indicating it operated out of Banff, Scotland. These drifters were capable of shooting up a hundred nets, each one measuring 59 metres long by 10 metres deep, which would cover a distance of over two kilometres. This method involved catching the fish by their gills and was mainly used against the herring and mackerel shoals as they migrated from the Shetlands south along the east coast.
