HMS 'Royal Oak' (1862); Warship; Armoured wooden broadside ship

Scale: Unknown. A half hull model of the starboard side of the armoured wooden broadside warship HMS 'Royal Oak' (1862), showing the method of ventilating the lower deck and the lower deck cabins. The section shows three decks which have been stained and varnished, and annotated to show the positions of features such as the funnel, gratings, masts, capstans and stores. These annotations have been hand-written in cream paint on a black background edged in maroon. The exterior of the hull has been painted realistically with dark green below the waterline with a red stripe, and black above with an off-white band encompassing the gun ports. Deck beams have been indicated in black along the edges of the deck.

In the centre of the main deck information about the ship has been inscribed "H.M.S. "Royal Oak" Extra Ventilation as shewn in Yellow. Scuttles " " " " Red. Casing Bulkhead " " " " Black". A paper label has been applied to the main deck marked "4". Around the edge of the main deck ventilators have been depicted painted in yellow on the inboard hull and their position marked on the deck by inscribed circles. The model is mounted on a mahogany baseboard, bevelled on three sides and supported by six bun feet.
