Queen Elizabeth (1940); Merchant vessel; Passenger vessel; Passenger liner

Scale: Unknown. A working model of a launching mechanism at the shipbuilding yard of John Brown & Co Ltd at Clydebank. The model is housed in a bespoke wooden travelling case which opens at the top and front. It has been made in dark stained and polished mahogany, and lacquered brass, and depicts a stylised section of slipway to which is attached the launching mechanism. The mechanism is battery operated and is activated by pressing a button marked "Press", mounted onto the bottom right-hand corner of the baseboard to which the model is secured.

Attached to the inside of the lid of the case is a label which reads "Presented to their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose, a souvenir of the launching of the "Queen Elizabeth" on the 27th September 1938". Accompanying the case is a folded wallet onto which are mounted twelve black and white photographic prints that show the operation of the model. Secured by two slots at the back and right-hand side of the case is a further small wooden case containing a much smaller scale full hull model of the passenger liner Queen Elizabeth (1940), which is rigged and painted in realistic colours.
