Service vessel; Lifeboat

Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a self-righting lifeboat (circa 1850) made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings and partly painted. The hull is made plank-on-frame, carvel-built and is double ended with buoyancy tanks at the bow and stern. The vessel is depicted with a crew of twelve, all made in a highly stylised manner in wood and uniformly painted. The hull is varnished or polished below the waterline and painted black above. The decks at the bow and stern have each been made from single pieces of cork with a square access hatch inserted, and they have been lashed down with rope tied-off on the strakes that run the entire length of the hull. Other fittings include a lug-rigged foremast set with a large single sail; five thwarts, painted grey, each with two crewmembers; and a short lug-rigged mizzen set with a single sail and with a red ensign flying from the peak.
