Noddea; Refuge; Service vessel; Lifeboat

Scale: circa 1:24. A contemporary full hull model representing the 'Noddea' (circa 1880) and 'Refuge', tubular lifeboats. The model is decked, equipped and rigged with masts and spars minus the sails. The model is inscribed with what may be a fictitious name, ‘Refuge’, on the port broadside and the name ‘Noddea’ on the starboard broadside. It has been built in the amateur style of a sailor made model and is complete with a wooden glazed case labelled ‘Property of D V Proctor’.

This model represents probably the first of the three of this class of lifeboat stationed at Rhyl, North Wales, from 1856 to 1893. Designed by Henry Richardson of Bala, these boats measured 33 feet with a beam of 8 feet 9 inches and were either rowed by 12 oars or sailed, by a crew of up to 18. Although the design was never adopted nationally, it was ideal for the sandbank-strewn shallow waters of the Dee estuary, capable of working in only 16 inches of water. Although they would not self right if overturned, the slatted floors between the two hulls ensured that however uncomfortable it might be for their crews, they could never be swamped.
