Iron Duke (1870); Warship; Battleship

Scale: 1:12. A sectional model of the gundeck of the battleship Iron Duke (1870) made in wood with metal fittings and painted in realistic colours. The model depicts a single muzzle-loading gun, mounted on a pivoting carriage, with gearing for running the gun out and rails in the deck to allow it to be moved from one gunport to another. One gunport is shown in the open position, the other is closed. The gun and gundeck section is contained in a box-like structure, one short side of which is omitted and one hinged long side of which can be lowered horizontal to extend the width of the deck section and rails. The inboard bulwarks are painted white and the deck is stained and varnished wood and scored to simulate planking. Fittings include a worm, reamer, and other equipment stored on racks fitted to the bulwarks, and two pairs of shell cases, each with four shells that are painted blue. On the side of the slide ‘38 RML gun with Captain Scott's patent slide. Scale I in to I foot. W H Bambury RN maker’.
