What is Unboxing the Universe?
Unboxing the Universe is a family-friendly science theatre show presented live by our Astronomy team.
Where does Unboxing the Universe take place?
This science theatre show takes place in the Lecture Theatre, Level 0, at the National Maritime Museum.
When are Unboxing the Universe shows taking place?
From 3 April 2026, theatre shows take place every Saturday and Sunday during term time and every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday during the school holidays.
What time are the Unboxing the Universe shows on?
Every Saturday and Sunday: 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
School holidays: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday: 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
How long is the Unboxing the Universe show?
Each show lasts 35-45 minutes.
Are all Unboxing the Universe shows the same?
Yes, the multi-sensory demonstrations will be the same. Shows are presented live by a Royal Observatory Greenwich Astronomer and will also include the opportunity for the audience to ask any questions of their own.
Can we bring food and drink to Unboxing the Universe shows?
No, food and drink cannot be consumed in the Lecture Theatre.
If you want to bring a packed lunch, we have a picnic area next to Ocean Court Café, on Level 1 of the National Maritime Museum.
Is there be a buggy park?
Yes, the nearest buggy park is adjacent to AHOY! Children’s Gallery. We also have another buggy park outside the Voyagers gallery in the Sammy Ofer Wing. Items are left at visitors' own risk. No buggies are allowed inside the Lecture Theatre.
Is Unboxing the Universe a seated theatre show?
Yes. Please follow any guidance given by staff regarding seating on arrival at the Lecture Theatre.
How much is a ticket to Unboxing the Universe?
£16 per adult / child / student. You can book tickets here.
Do Royal Museums Greenwich Family Members need to pay to see Unboxing the Universe?
No, Royal Museums Greenwich Family Members can see this theatre show for free. Members who hold a Family Membership can book tickets here.
Can I book Unboxing the Universe tickets on the day?
Yes. If a session is available, you can book a ticket at one of our admissions desks at the National Maritime Museum.
What’s the capacity for Unboxing the Universe?
There’s space for 100 ticket holders for each show.
Can I select my seats when I book?
No. Please simply follow any guidance about seating given by staff when you arrive at the Lecture Theatre.
Can I leave the theatre and re-enter a show with my ticket?
No, unfortunately if you leave the Lecture Theatre during a show, you won’t be able to come back in.
What happens if my plans change or I miss my show?
All tickets are non-transferable, non-exchangeable and non-refundable. Ticket holders are informed at the time of booking that shows start on time. We advise ticket holders to arrive at the Lecture Theatre at least 15 minutes before shows commence. Our refund policy and our terms and conditions are stated on e-tickets. What’s the recommended age for the Unboxing the Universe show?
The recommended age for the show is 7+. Older or younger siblings of any age will be admitted but parents and carers should understand that the show has not been designed for their age range.
All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Is Unboxing the Universe suitable for adults without children?
Adults are welcome to book without children but please be aware the shows have been developed with families in mind.
Can I bring a baby to Unboxing the Universe?
The recommended age for the show is 7+. Younger siblings of any age will be admitted, provided parents and carers understand the fact that the show has not been designed for their age range.
All children except children under 1 must be allocated a seat and require a child’s ticket.
Children under 1 will be admitted to Unboxing the Universe for free.
Can wheelchair users access the Lecture Theatre?
Yes. Please select a wheelchair user ticket when booking. When you arrive, talk to a member of staff and they will show you to the lift down to the Lecture Theatre. A staff member will need operate the lift.
The lift has a width of 77 cm and a length of 125 cm. The maximum weight limit for the lift is 340 kg.
We can accommodate up to two wheelchairs per show.
Royal Museums Greenwich offers free entry for one person accompanying disabled visitors. Companion tickets can be selected with any paying ticket.

Are there any flashing lights in the show?
This show contains colourful lights and moving lights. It does not contain strobe lights or any flashing lights.
Are there sudden loud noises or strong smells in the show?
The show contains some strong smells at specific points within the show, and some loud noises during specific demonstrations.
The presenter will warn the audience before any strong smells or loud noises occur.
