Session overview

Please note: this session is suitable for years 5 and 6 only.

Introduction

Learners are introduced to the Museum and discuss what is meant by the term migration.

Luggage tags

Each learner is given a luggage tag with details of a real person who came to the UK from the Caribbean or was born in the UK during the Windrush generation. They discuss as a whole class and move around to arrange themselves by island, age group and roles/occupations.

What is Windrush?

Learners examine different picture clues to think about what the word Windrush means.

Object handling and exploration

In five groups, learners unpack a case filled with handling objects, documents and clues to a real person who migrated to the UK from the Caribbean. Learners see what they can infer from the contents of the cases and then explore additional quotes and images relating to the life of each Windrush elder. Each case is co-created with the person whose story it depicts.

Discussion

Feedback on the cases and the stories of the people they represent, including experiences of prejudice and racism.

Plenary

The legacies and ongoing contributions of Windrush generations to UK culture.

Learning objectives

Learners will:

  • Understand the story of HMT Empire Windrush and why we mark Windrush Day in the UK
  • Explore stories of different generations connected to Windrush and the struggles they faced
  • Make connections to their lives today
